The Elders were the young monks who escaped the invasion of the Chinese Communist army and fled across the Himalayas with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Less than 90 survived the attack and they rebuilt the monastery by hand in India. They are all in their late seventies or early eighties and just a few of them are still alive.
